Serving Restaurant Guests with Language Barriers

Have a table of guests who don’t speak English? Bring samples of food to the table to facilitate communication. A smile and pointing to something overcomes the language barrier. Use body language:

  • waive hand and point for a spicy item
  • rub your tummy to signal tasty items
  • use the OK sign
  • use your hands to demonstrate size of menu item or plate

A little creativity can go a long way. Your guests with have a great experience and be grateful for your efforts – hopefully thanking you with a good tip!
